This region stretches from almost the boundaries of Glasgow to Oban in the north, taking in the Isle of Skye, but the longest journey would probably be from Glasgow to Campbeltown in the South-West of Scotland.
The 160 miles can take four hours by car but many golfing enthusiasts have made the pilgrimage to the Mull of Kintyre to play one of Scotland’s truly great hidden gems, Machrihanish Links, laid down by Old Tom Morris in 1879.
Now there’s twice the reason to make the journey, which can be cut to 25 minutes by plane or at a more leisurely pace by ferry, as in 2009 the new Machrihanish Dunes opened - the first true 18-hole links course to be built on the west coast in more than a hundred years.
Set hard against the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Machrihanish Dunes shares breathtaking views with its much-revered neighbour and promises to be as great a challenge.
While in the area take in Carradale, overlooking the Isle of Arran. It’s a challenging heathland seaside course with tiny greens and unusual hazards - look out for wild goats on rocky outcrops. And Dunaverty, a spectacularly scenic undulating seaside links course with great views of Ireland and the Mull of Kintyre.

While some say that Fife was the cradle of golf, others claim that Ayrshire, and in particular the coast which often enjoys a mild climate when the rest of Britain is shivering, is its heart.
Ayrshire is best known for its dazzling array of challenging links courses and two in particular – the Open Championship venues of Turnberry and Royal Troon. And it is also where the first Open Championship was staged at Prestwick.
Turnberry, which last hosted The Open in 2009, is an ideal location for a golfing holiday with two championship courses (the Ailsa and the Kintyre) overlooked by the impressive five-star hotel that can also offer private lodge accommodation for parties of golfers.
Ailsa’s lighthouse hole is one of the most photographed in the world. Even if you’re not playing it, take a look. The rocks are 390 million years old and from the green you can see the remains of Robert the Bruce’s castle.
Just up the road is another classic, Royal Troon, an undulating links full of bumps and hollows and rated amongst the world’s best. Founded in 1878, it is best known for its short eighth hole, known as the Postage Stamp. Only 126 yards, but it can take anything from a 3-iron to a wedge depending on the wind. Not everyone has enjoyed the experience. In the1950 Open, Herman Tissies, a German amateur, took 15 blows to get down.
Even if you are not contemplating playing it, visit Prestwick where the first Open was held in 1860. Take time to visit the stone cairn, close to the putting green, which is on the site of the original first tee. Imagine all those years ago Young Tom Morris, perhaps the first superstar of golf, facing the monster of the then first which stretched to 578 yards and ponder how, using hickory shaft and a gutty ball, he managed to hole out in three.
In Ayrshire you are spoilt for choice and some of the many courses worth playing are Kilmarnock Barassie, Irvine Bogside, Dundonald Links and the quirky Girvan.And the island of Arran – a 55-minute ferry trip across the Firth of Clyde - is a golfing destination all on its own with seven courses, including the intriguing 12-hole Shiskine, all offering different challenges.

One of the most picturesque regions with rolling heather-clad hills, the rivers Tweed and Teviot running through wooded valleys, and historical castles, abbeys and watchtowers that is known for its hidden gems.
You will receive a friendly welcome in the Borders while the courses are more than a match for any golfer’s game.
In recent years has added two championship courses, The Roxburghe and the Macdonald Cardrona. The Roxburghe is a long championship course at 7,111 yards set in more than 200 acres of parkland surrounding The Roxburghe Hotel, a Jacobean-style mansion built in 1853 that once played host to Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Hilly in parts with 80 bunkers and lakes it was designed to suit all standards of player as its owner, the Duke of Roxburghe, explained: “Golfers will be free to play from whichever set of tees they choose. I want them to enjoy themselves.”
The latest addition to the collection, the Cardrona, has been called the Gleneagles of the South while Hawick on Vertish Hill offers outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. Also take in Kelso with The Stank a water hazard crossing six holes; climb ‘Everest’ at Minto; and take on Eyemouth’s short sixth which was voted Britain’s most extraordinary hole.

In any beauty pageant of the world’s most stunning courses, Loch Lomond would come out on top or very close most of the time. It is simply one of the most awesome locations in which to play golf with many of its fairways running alongside the bonny, bonny banks of Loch Lomond.
Unfortunately, the closest most get to it is watching the Scottish Open in the week before the Open Championship. Loch Lomond offers lush fairways, large beautifully manicured greens, the restored Rossdhu House as a clubhouse, and it reeks of exclusivity. Exclusive, it is. Only a member can invite you to play and even the members are not encouraged to over golf.
But all is not lost just down the road the De Vere Cameron House Hotel’s new course The Carrick on Loch Lomond – only a 30-minute drive from Glasgow - is open to the public and it runs its more exclusive neighbour close as a golfing challenge. Designed by Canada’s top architect Doug Carrick, it has already hosted top championships including the PGA Cup
While other locations in the region might find it difficult to match the beauty of Loch Lomond, there are many fine courses such as Stirling, built on a volcanic slab of rock with views of the castle, Vale of Leven, Callander and Falkirk where several Roman burial plots have been found, including a sandstone grave below the seventh green containing the remains of a centurion, a spearhead and the centre part of a shield.

For some this area would be associated more with poetry than golf being where Robert Burns lived and crafted his verse that was inspired in some part by the beauty of the Southern uplands.
But for golfing enthusiasts Dumfries & Galloway is well known for its collection of challenging and interesting courses and in particular its gem of gems, Southerness.
If it had not been for its location 15 miles south of Dumfries perhaps this links, running along the Solway Firth coastline beneath the Galloway Hills, would have attracted international competitions rather than the national championships it has hosted so well.Known for its long carries, tight fairways and long par-4s, it’s relatively young being designed in 1947 by Mackenzie Ross, who rebuilt Turnberry’s Ailsa course.
Wherever you go in this region you will find good value golf and a genuine welcome with courses like Powfoot on the Solway Firth, Solway Links, Portpatrick, Brighouse Bay and Wigtownshire County, a links on beautiful Luce Bay, all worth the journey.

If Scotland is the Home of Golf then Fife was the cradle and right at its centre is the ‘Auld Grey Toon’ of St Andrews.
To tread the turf of St Andrews, where in the 13th century shepherds played a form of golf, is a marvellous experience.
Over 600 years, one simple track hacked through the bushes and heather has developed into seven golf courses - the world-famous Old Course and its sister courses, the New, Jubilee, Eden, Strathtyrum and Balgove, and just recently opened Castle – all in effect public courses run by the St Andrews Links Trust.
With hazards such as The Beardies, Hell Bunker and the Valley of Sin and the famous Road Hole you can expect a complete test of your abilities on the Old Course.While St Andrews is immersed in the history of the game it now has an interesting mix of the old and the new with in recent years four stunning courses adding to the variety of this golfing centre – Kingbarns, the Torrance and Kittocks courses at the Fairmont St Andrews Hotel overlooking the town, and the Duke’s Course, which is unusual for a St Andrews course in that it is a classic, inland parkland course.
But away from St Andrews Fife has much to offer and there are a host of good courses with Lundin, a links with four holes more akin to parkland, and the quirky nine-hole Anstruther set in a picturesque fishing village in the East Neuk of Fife, Crail’s Balcomie Links and Elie, where the great James Braid learned to play, all very much worth a visit.

GLASGOW & CLYDE VALLEY:
Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and as you would expect there is a diverse range of golfing venues on offer in the city and its environs but there is also a proud tradition of golf with references to the game being played in Glasgow going back as early as 1721.
With a good road network, it’s possible to get quickly out of the city and there is no shortage of splendid golf courses to choose from.The closest to the city centre is Haggs Castle, which staged the first Scottish Open in 1986, but if it’s history you want about 25 miles south of the city is Lanark, which claims to be the 25th oldest club in the world.
Perhaps more interesting is that it can put one over the Open Championship. Originally a six-hole course, members still compete for the Silver Claret Jug, which was introduced in 1857 three years before the first Open.
Not far from there at Biggar the hilly, moorland course of Leadhills is the highest in Scotland at 1,500 feet above sea level.
And another first is at Westerwood Hotel, Golf & Country Club, an undulating moorland course with many water hazards. Opened in 1989, its designer was Seve Ballesteros - with a little help from Dave Thomas – and was the first course in the UK by the Spanish maestro.
Others worth a visit are Cathkin Braes, East Renfrewshire, which enjoys magnificent scenery and panoramic views over Glasgow and the Clyde Valley to the Campsie Fells to the north, The Glasgow Club at Killermont whose clubhouse, a former stately home built around the time of Trafalgar, houses a trophy collection that cannot be bettered anywhere, and Pollok, which was laid out by Dr Alister MacKenzie, the designer of Augusta National.

HIGHLANDS:
The most dramatic of the Scottish regions. This is the home of eagles, beaches, mountains and whisky. And the world’s finest links courses, too. The undoubted star of the North is the magnificent Royal Dornoch course of which Tom Watson once said: “It’s the most fun I’ve ever had on a golf course.”
Bordered by the Dornoch Firth with views of the mountains of Sutherland and the gorse ablaze with yellow in early summer this is a magical place to play.Golf was first played here in 1616 and this outstanding links encapsulates everything a golfer seeks – a beautiful setting, a tough but fair test of skill and fast, tricky greens and a wind that never seems to come from the same direction three days running.
It’s not a long course but you have to think your way around the bunkers, sandhills, hummocks, knolls and swales that can punish you, and the inverted saucer-like greens are extremely testing.
Close by is the equally demanding Carnegie Club links at the exclusive Skibo Castle – venue for Madonna’s marriage to Guy Ritchie - while Nairn, which hosted the 1999 Walker Cup is a traditional Scottish links on which Colin Montgomerie won his Scottish amateur title.
But these well established courses are facing rivalry from a couple of newcomers that may be young as golf courses go but have excellent pedigrees. Spey Valley is a welcome newcomer at the Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort. Running along the banks of the River Spey, which is a vital ingredient of much of Scotland’s whisky, with heather-lined fairways and the Cairngorms as a backdrop, the 7,153-yard course is tough challenge. And in 1999 the spectacular Castle Stuart opened overlooking the Moray Firth.
Wherever you golf in the Highlands will be an enjoyable and uplifting experience but Brora and the most north-westerly course on the British mainland, Durness, with its daunting final tee shot over the Atlantic, are also worth a visit.

NORTH-EAST:
Edinburgh is the perfect centre for visitors wanting a full range of experiences. While the vibrant cosmopolitan city offers all the delights and attractions anyone could want, the city itself and the surrounding area has an amazing variety of golf courses from links to parkland and heathland to moorland.
Twenty miles from Edinburgh in Gullane there is the regular Open Championship venue of Muirfield, one of the world’s great courses. Designed in 1891 by Old Tom Morris, it is a demanding 6,601-yard par-70 from the medal tees.
The thick rough and cavernous bunkers, of which there are 151, means it is a very severe test that invokes respect from all who have tangled with it. Henry Cotton called it ‘cruelly fair’ and Jack Nicklaus was so taken with this links he named his golf complex in Ohio, Muirfield Village, after it.
Just down the road Gullane Golf Club has three superb links courses, which are open throughout the year. Course No.1 is the toughest at 6,466 yards, especially when the wind gets up, but the other two are certainly no pushovers. Another couple of miles along the coast the classic links at North Berwick is one you must add to your collection.
When in the area visit Musselburgh Links, The Old Course. To some, the Old Course may be just a 2,808-yard nine-hole links course encircled by a racecourse. Others claim it was possibly the first proper golf course in the world and it is believed that Mary, Queen of Scots played golf here in 1567. So what challenges did they face? See for yourself. Musselburgh, which hosted the Open Championship on six occasions between 1874 and 1889, hires out hickory-shafted clubs and gutta percha balls.
The choice is huge. There’s Dunbar, which has been used as an Open Championship qualifying course, and Longniddry while the capital itself offers plenty of top-quality golf.
The Marriott Dalmahoy has staged a number of top events including the Solheim Cup. Bruntsfield Links moved to its current site in 1898 but is one of the world’s oldest golf clubs having been founded in 1761, while at Baberton you will have magnificent views of Edinburgh Castle.

NORTH-EAST
The North-East is very much in the limelight at the moment with American entrepreneur Donald Trump planning a new resort and course at Balmedie near Aberdeen and local boy Paul Lawrie, winner of the 1999 Open title, building a course at the Blairs Estate on the River Dee.
With the 2011 Walker Cup to be played over Royal Aberdeen’s Balgownie Links, the region is now not just regarded as the place to fish for salmon and trout but also to bag a new birdies, too.Golf has been an important component of the area since 1565 when there was a reference made to a golf hole in the city of Aberdeen, known as the ‘Silver City by the Sea’ because its building of silvery grey granite sparkle in the sunlight, and there is an abundance of courses of all types to ensure that the visiting golfer will never be disappointed.
Royal Aberdeen, founded in 1780 is the sixth oldest golf club in the world and its Balgownie Links is a challenging championship course set amongst hill, sand and sea. While a great experience, it is not for the faint-hearted. If you are a competent player, be prepared for a test of your ability. If not, bring plenty of balls.
To the North, Cruden Bay wends between towering dunes and knee-high rough and is one of the finest examples of a traditional Scottish links course. If that is not enough to give you a nightmare then the brooding presence of the ruins of Slains Castle might. They dominate the first three holes and reportedly were the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel.
There’s golf in the centre of Aberdeen at Hazlehead and King’s Links in the shadow of Aberdeen FC’s Pittodrie stadium. If you want to rub shoulders with royalty you won’t get on the Balmoral course inland, which is for members of the royal family and staff, but Ballater is next door. With a spectacular coastline, the scenery is amazing especially at Stonehaven, Peterhead, Fraserburgh, where golf was first played in 1613, Rosehearty and Royal Tarlair to name a few.

Stromness is perhaps the best known of the six Orkney clubs of which three, the 18-hole Stromness and Orkney and South Ronaldsay, are on the main island. Orkney offers all disciplines of golf and a number of unusual hazards such as wartime bunkers.
Every year the Stromness Open attracts golfers from all over the world to play midnight golf on the seaside parkland course with a tight and tricky layout that has outstanding views of Hoy Sound.
Orkney Golf Club sits on the hills above the capital Kirkwall and it too has scenic views which are well worth the climb.

PERTH & TAYSIDE:
A region with a great variety of courses including stunning inland tracks as well as the famous Carnoustie Links, an Open Championship venue that has been known to reduce the best of professionals to tears.
But over the next few years it will be the magnificent Gleneagles, renowned for its five-star hotel and its excellent golfing centre, that will hold centre stage in the run-up to its hosting of the 2014 Ryder Cup.
Gleneagles offers three championship, undulating moorland courses - the inspiration of five times Open champion James Braid (King`s and Queen`s) and Jack Nicklaus (The PGA Centenary) - surrounded by the Grampian mountains, the Trossachs and the Ochil Hills.
The PGA Centenary, an American-style championship course measuring 7,288 yards, will be the stage for the Ryder Cup but anyone can enjoy it as there are five tees making it a fair test for all abilities.
Crieff is a super example of a parkland course. At first sight, it looks not too testing with reasonably wide fairways, no heavy rough and always the chance of a shot no matter how wayward. On a summer’s day it is a delightful golfing experience, but when the wind gets up and the rains set in Crieff could be renamed grief.
Also worth a visit is Blairgowrie whose tree-lined fairways of pine and silver birch, and gorse, broom and heather, and slick greens make it an amazing experience while Letham Grange and Murrayshall have a legion of admirers.
Over at Dundee, there’s Downfield, which has often been rated Scotland’s best inland course and Monifieth, which has also hosted Open qualifiersBut there are also many outstanding links courses such as Montrose where golf has been played since 1562. The Medal Links is only 18 holes these days unlike back in 1866 when a round was over 25 holes.
And that brings us back to the magnificent monster of Carnoustie, at 7,361 yards from the championship tees, it is regarded by many as the toughest links in the world. Even from the club`s medal tees, 6,941 yards, it is still formidable.

This is the place to come for bird watching, seal and otter spotting and the golf’s enjoyable too. But don’t be surprised to read under Local Rules that hoof marks, tractor ruts, rabbit holes, collapsed rabbit holes and sheep tracks can be treated as G.U.R.

Golf in the Western Isles has had its fair share of publicity around the world in recent years and those making the journey have not been disappointed.Around twenty years ago the committee of the Harris Golf Club, whose challenging nine-hole course clings to the hill above the spectacular Scarista beach, devised with an ingenious way to raise the club’s profile and garner much-needed funds for course improvements.
They offered a life membership for £50 plus a vellum certificate with the promise that you could play the course for free for the rest of your life. The offer made news around the world and was taken up by many enthusiasts including Australian cricket captain Ian Chappell. Locals got used to the sight of wealthy life members flying in by private jet to Stornoway in the north, playing a round of golf and then flying off again.
More recently on the island of South Uist the golfing world was astounded when the forgotten course of Askernish that Old Tom Morris had laid down in 1891 was discovered under a carpet of wild flowers. Restoration work has returned it to its original glory and the club is offering membership to overseas players to help fund the ongoing maintenance of this magnificent gem.

When you think of great golf holiday destinations in the USA, Alabama might not be the first state that springs to mind, well think again because the Robert Trent Jones Trail (RTJ) offers a unique and quality golf experience second to none.
With more than 20 outstanding courses spread across the state from Muscle Shoals near the Tennessee border in the north to Mobile on the gulf coast, the RTJ Trail is now the biggest tourist attraction in Alabama.
It might not suit those who are happy to plonk themselves down in one place for 10 to 14 days, however if the idea of a 2 or 3 centre tour appeals then Alabama should definitely be on your list.
The reasonably priced green fees, consistent high quality of the courses and a level of service rarely found anywhere these days, puts the RTJ Trail up there with the best value golf holiday destinations in the USA.
The RTJ Trail can easily be combined with some of the terrific golf resorts in the Atlanta area to create a memorable holiday experience.
Whilst not suffering too much from extremes of climate the best time to visit the courses in the north would be late April through June and September through early November and in the south March and April should also provide good golfing weather.
AUBURN / OPELIKA:
Being only a 90 minute or so drive from Atlanta airport the Grand National courses in the Auburn/Opelika area are the ideal first stop on the RTJ Trail. On site are two superb 18 hole courses, the Links and the Lakes and a short (3328 yard) 18 hole course considered to be the best short course in the States.
Only a short drive from the courses is the No: 4 Auburn Marriott Opelika Hotel and whilst the RTJ Trail does have Marriott and Renaissance Hotels close to all the trail courses there are other hotels available in the nearby University town of Auburn.
Climate wise it is advisable to do this northern area of the RTJ Trail between April and June or in October/November. This avoids the high temperatures and humidity that you can experience during the mid-summer months and the cooler months during winter when the dormant bermuda grass means the courses are not at their best.

MONTGOMERY:
Next obvious stop on the RTJ Trail would be the state capital, Montgomery or the Marriott at Capitol Hill golf club just north of the city.
From here you can easily drive to what many feel is the most beautiful and challenging stop on the Trail - Cambrian Ridge, about a 45 minute drive south of Montgomery it is well worth the drive. Next on the Trail is the much lauded 54 hole complex at Capitol Hill just 13 miles north of Montgomery city centre. All 3 courses here, The Judge, The Legislator & The Senator are rated in the top 50 in the state each offering a different challenge.
Standing on the banks of the Alabama river, Montgomery itself is steeped in southern history and has a wealth of historic buildings worth viewing not least the Capitol building which stands on the same avenue as the church where Martin Luther King Junior was pastor.

Heading north out of Ross Bridge on I65 for a further 140 miles or so brings you to the Muscle Shoals/Florence area close to the Alabama/Tennessee border. Here overlooking the Tennessee river and historic Wilson Dam is the Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa and a short drive away two more masterpieces by RTJ - Fighting Joe and The Schoolmaster.
As well as two great golf courses the Muscles Shoals/Florence area figures prominently in the history of rock and R & B through the 1960s and 70s. Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Otis Reading and Lynard Skynyrd are just a few of the hundreds of well known musicians who came to the area to capture the unique sounds of the Muscle Shoals studios.
In nearby Tuscumbia is the former home of the famous blind and deaf author Helen Keller. The subject of numerous books and films her home is now a museum and provides a fascinating insight into her tragic childhood and the amazing person she developed into with the aid of her equally famous nurse Annie Sullivan.
If you are heading back to Atlanta for the flight home and have not had enough golf, there is the option to play two more superb courses at Hampton Cove GC in the Huntsville area or at Silver Lakes which is home to another wonderful 27 holes of golf and a further 9 hole short course.

MONTEREY:

The city of Monterey is a pleasure to explore and a stroll along Fishermans Wharf and Cannery Row where John Steinbeck drew inspiration for his novel about life in the heyday of the sardine canning industry, before dining at one of the many superb restaurants is an ideal way to while away a few memorable hours.
Located around a third of the way down this picturesque coastline between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Monterey county is the ideal 3 or 4 night stopover on your tour of California. AUGUSTA:
Just over a two hour drive east of Atlanta, AUGUSTA, Georgia, is home to the the 2nd most famous golf tournament there is - The Masters. Whilst we cannot arrange for you to play THEE Augusta National course we can recommend you go and enjoy some good ol'e southern hospitality in what is probably after St Andrews, the most well known golf destination in the world.
As you would expect the area around Augusta has some superb golf courses and with very reasonable green fees especially when you factor in the standard of the courses.
Birthplace of the Godfather of Soul James Brown, downtown Augusta and the Riverwalk along the Savannah River offers a variety of attractions such as great local bars and restaurants serving up the local culinary delights. Frequent musical festivals and arts and craft shops celebrating the history and culture of the region are an added attraction.
We think Augusta makes for an ideal 2 to 3 night stay on a multi-centre tour of the PEACH state or as a stopover en-route to the Carolina coast.

SAVANNAH:
Often overlooked by those heading for its nearby and better known neighbour Hilton Head, Savannah often described as The Belle, of the south has much more going for it than most people are aware of.
Standing on the banks of the Savannah River this beautiful southern city is full of charm and character and has a great choice of reasonably priced hotels and a selection of fine restaurants offering cuisines from around the world. The historic district paved with cobblestones is a joy to explore and a few days sampling the culture, charms and other numerous attractions of this unique and history laden city is usually regarded as time well spent.
And then there is the golf - with several very good courses within a 30 minute drive of the city centre and the fabled Hilton Head courses only a further 15 minutes away. These are just a few good reasons to make Savannah another stop on your visit to Georgia and the Carolinas.
Easily accessible by flights connecting to all the major airline hubs in the States, a popular option is to either start or finish your holiday in Savannah and drop the rental car at your final destination.
Being so far south Savannah has a moderate all year round climate for golfers, however to experience the best conditions for great golf March thru early June and October and November would be our choice of times to visit.

Whilst Las Vegas needs very little introduction as the entertainment Capital of the world, you might not know that it is also a great destination for your golf holiday or as part of a multi-centre tour. With the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Tucson and Scottsdale in Arizona and Palm Springs in California all within an easy days drive of Vegas there are limitless combinations to make up a great tour.

The golf courses in and around Las Vegas are mostly desert style and can be expensive at peak times. They do however have significant reductions on green fees for afternoon tee times therefore considerable savings can be made by delaying your golf until after 1200/1300 p.m.
Contrary to popular belief the climate for good golf is limited, we generally find that March, April and May and September through mid November are the best times to play golf in Nevada.
LAS VEGAS:
Known in the past as the Gambling capital of the World, Las Vegas has in recent years transformed itself to appeal to a far wider range of holiday maker, one of them being the Golfer.
Whilst several of the older courses adjacent to the Strip have been swallowed up by huge hotel developments there is still a choice of more than 30 excellent courses within an hours drive and Las Vegas really can be considered one of the top ten golf holiday destinations in the USA.

If you are serious about your golf and relish your golf holidays then North Carolina should be at the top of your wish list as a MUST visit destination.
From the spectacular scenery and courses in the Blue Ridge and Great Smokie Mountains in the west, to the golfing mecca of the Sandhills/Pinehurst area an hours drive south of Raleigh Durham, to the coastal wetlands of the Brunswick Isles (just 20 miles from Myrtle beach), more enjoyable golf and surroundings are hard to find.
A golf holiday in North Carolina is just not like any other, the air is pure, the scenery is specactular and every round you play is a lasting memory.
PINEHURST:
This is one great golf holiday destination that in our opinion is sadly overlooked by most U.K golfers, however if you are looking for a great golfing experience that gives you that extra special buzz and lasting memories, then the Sandhills/Pinehurst of North Carolina should be on your must visit list.
Nestled in the Sandhills of central North Carolina lies a roughly triangular area encompassing the town's of Southern Pines, Aberdeen, and the historic village of Pinehurst designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the creator of New York's Central Park. The center of Pinehurst-area golf is, and always has been the world-renowned Pinehurst Resort and the host of several US OPEN Championships - the Pinehurst No2 course. What is not widely known is that the area is also home to in excess of 40 excellent golf courses and can quite rightly be called the "Home of American Golf".
Steeped in golf tradition, the Sandhills/Pinehurst area is not renowned for its outstanding golf courses without good reason. The natural rolling sandhills, indiginous spruce forests and natural wetlands provide the ideal terrain for for the Worlds best course designers to ply there trade. Throw in a some geniune Southern hospitality and a pretty good all year (you might give December through February miss)round cimate and you can perhaps understand why the Sandhills area is so highly thought of with the knowledgable travelling golfer.
In addition to Pinehurst Resorts No 2 course, several others are among the nations elite. The list of leading area course designers includes Palmer, Maples, Nicklaus, Player, Jones, Fazio - however it is the name Donald Ross the legendary Scottish course designer who put Pinehurst golf on the World stage. He came to Pinehurst in 1900 to redesign the Resorts No 1 course,stayed for 48 years, and created the Resorts No's 2, 3 and 4 courses(significantly updated in 2000 by Tom Fazio and reopened as a new course), as well as the courses at Pine Needles and Mid Pines. In all, Ross designed or redesigned more than 400 others in North America but considered Pinehurst No 2 his home course, calling it the "fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed".
A young Arnold Palmer was a regular at Pinehurst during college days and who could forget the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No 2, where an exuberant Payne Stewart, clad in signature traditional knickers and tam-o-shanter cap, won his second US Open just months before an untimely death. The US Open returned to No 2 in 2005 when Michael Campbell the like able New Zealander saw off the challenge of Tiger Woods and company over the final dramatic holes.
Whilst these 3 or 4 championship courses are at the high end of most golfers budget the Sandhills/Pinehurst area offers some of the best value quality golf you could wish for, and when the fall colours spread south in October/November you would be hard pushed to find anywhere in the world with a more perfect setting.
The best times to golf are April through June and again in September through early November, when the fall colours rival anything that New England has to offer - and a lot less expensive too !
With being within a 3 to 4 hour drive of several other great golf holiday destinations such as Myrtle Beach, Augusta and Charleston, Pinehurst is perfect for a few nights stopover on a multi-centre tour.
