Ex-HMAS Brisbane Double Dive
  • Duration: 5 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: Mooloolaba, QLD
  • Product code: HMASDOUBLE

On your arrival to Sunreef, we will check you in and see that your gear is organized, whether you prefer one of our staff to set up for you, or you would like to do it for yourself. We'll then depart out to the Ex-HMAS Brisbane. Each diver will be given a thorough briefing about the dive as the boat traverses the calm waters of the Mooloolah River. Once the boat is at the wreck and moored, the crew will help get divers into the water. The dive will last for 50 minutes, or as soon as a diver or their buddy reaches 50 bar, whichever comes first. The divers then return to the shop, where gear is washed for you.

The Ex-HMAS Brisbane dive site

Dive one the world's best wreck sites, the Ex-HMAS Brisbane, a decommissioned guided missile destroyer. Located just 2.9 nautical miles offshore which makes it an easy venture out and is available to dive all year round.

Sunreef has exclusive use of the two midship moorings, making for two leisurely dives that allow divers to comfortably and safely visit the entire wreck.

Explore the outside of the wreck and encounter an abundance of local aquatic sea life that inhabits her. Discover the depths of her hull, enter the engine room or even visit the control room where her kill switches are still intact.

The vessel now serves as a world-class artificial reef and diving site. She has attracted divers from all over the world. Divers from Open Water level, to Divemaster, Instructors, dive shop owners and ex-servicemen who served on the HMAS Brisbane all sing the praises of this great wreck dive; She seems to be in the perfect diving spot. Sitting bolt upright the Ex-HMAS Brisbane has 15 metres of water over her forward decks and 18 metres over her stern. Consistently good water clarity and minimal swell makes for great diving. Just one dive on the Ex-HMAS Brisbane, and you readily understand why Sunreef is privileged to have been issued a licence by the Environment Protection Agency of the Queensland Government to conduct dive trips on the former HMAS Brisbane. The dive is phenomenal. There is certainly a lot of ship to see.

Just cruising around the outside, its sheer size makes it an awesome sight. Water temperatures range from 17C in winter to a summer high of 27C. Visibility averages around 15 metres but up to 20 metres or more is not uncommon. Environmental studies commissioned by the Environmental Protection Agency and conducted by scientists from the University of the Sunshine Coast and Queensland Museum confirms the diversity of marine life that has made the Brisbane home.

Local inhabitants include a large bull & eagle rays, angler fish, lionfish, blennies, nudibranchs, sea hares, squid and a school of juvenile red emperor and snapper. Other visitors include a shovelled nose rays, greasy cod and eagle rays. An octopus has made a home in a pyrotechnic tube on the deck. A resident school of predatory yellow tailed kingfish now ‘buzz’ the schools of of bait fish that surround the Ex-HMAS Brisbane. Up to 10 huge Queensland grouper have been seen at one time off the bow of the ship. A turtle has taken up residency on the aft funnel and eagle rays cruise between the 2 funnels. There’s also a huge amount of soft corals to be seen and hard corals are really getting established as well.

Night Double Dive: HMAS Brisbane
  • Duration: 5 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: Mooloolaba, Queensland
  • Product code: HMASNIGHT
A night dive on the Ex-HMAS Brisbane is entirely different from any in the day. The feel one has when entering "the darkness" in the water on any night dive is fleeting and exhilarating. That being said, on a missile destroyer wreck, there is a mystical feeling about it, as one compares its current life with that of its past. The Ex-HMAS itself provides protection and hiding places for many creatures in the day, which then come out at night. Many different crustaceans come out, such as crays, decorator crabs, and cleaner shrimps. Eels leave the shelter of their holes as they search for a meal. Octopuses walk the corridors that sailors once did. Nocturnal squirrelfish swim in and around the wreck, while daytime fish slumber, changing their coloration to better blend in with their environment.

On your arrival to Sunreef, we will check you in and see that your gear is organized, whether you prefer one of our staff to set up for you, or you would like to do it for yourself. Flinders Reef Day Trip
  • Duration: 7 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: Mooloolaba, QLD
  • Product code: FLINDERS

The reef:

Flinders Reef is located just north of Moreton Island, and is part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park, making it a fully protected marine sanctuary.

The reef was aptly named after Matthew Flinders, the explorer who led the first team to circumnavigate Australia, as many divers and snorkelers explore this reef today.

There are plenty of walls, gutters, caves and pinnacles to discover, all covered in dense coral, sponges, and plant life. There are plenty of brain, plate, and staghorn corals, along with many different soft corals, gorgonians, and anemones.

What makes Flinders Reef even more special is that it is a turtle cleaning station, making it very likely that you will see green, hawksbill, and/or loggerhead turtles. There are also many tropical and temperate fish (over 200 species) on this coral reef, with many blue tangs, clown triggerfish, yellow clownfish, and porcupine pufferfish, just to name a few.

In the warmer months, different fish frequent the reef, such as eagle rays and leopard sharks, whereas winter brings in grey nurse sharks and humpback whales!

The dives:

Our trip to Flinders Reef is a full day's trip. You'll meet at our dive shop in Mooloolaba at 7:00 am, and return around 3:30 pm. It takes one hour to get to Flinders Reef, which is just north of Morton Island.

We typically visit two sites at Flinders Reef, with lunch in between each site. Divers will have the opportunity to complete two dives (one at each location), with the option of going with a guide.

Reminder for divers:

Children under 8 are not permitted on board.

As with all dives, the night dive is subject to weather, and we will send out an email and text the day before at 3:30 pm to confirm the trip and its departure time.

Local Reefs Double Dive (Certified Divers Only)
  • Duration: 5 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: Mooloolaba, QLD
  • Product code: REEF

On your arrival to Sunreef, we will check you in and see that your gear is organized, whether you prefer one of our staff to set up for you, or you would like to do it for yourself. After we verify all paperwork is in order, settle any balances, site divers’ certification cards, and ensure gear is organized, we'll then depart out to one of our local reefs.

The dive sites:

Our sites will vary depending on conditions on the day but will include Mudjimba Island, Shellacey Reef, Caves, Fairyland, Wobby Rock, the Trench, and Hanging Rock. These sites have decent coral coverage, many macro opportunities, and cater to both the beginner and advanced diver. Visibility can vary from 10 to 20 meters with the sites' proximity to the coast and recent weather conditions. Depths vary from 10 to up to 30 meters and it is common to find many tropical fish, nudibranchs, and different crustaceans at these locations.

Night diving on these beautiful locations brings out a lot of different critters too! Lobsters, shrimps, moray eels, giant trevallies and turtles (if you’re lucky)!

Fairyland: This magical site has a maximum depth of 17 meters, accessible for all qualification levels. It is a lovely 5 meter wall, 50 meters in length. The top of the wall sits in 12 meters

of water and boasts some of the largest plate corals you will see on our reefs. It is home to an array of tropical reef fishes including the ever popular clown fish, nudibranch, eagle rays, moray eels, barracuda and turtles.

Mudjimba Island: This sheltered reef is perfect for training dives, snorkelers and even the most experienced divers will enjoy the colours this site has to offer. A lovely wall ranging from 16 meters up to 5 meters homes crayfish, wobbegong sharks, loads of nudibranch, cowries shells and even the occasional turtle, along with all the tropical reef fish and corals you would expect from Mooloolaba reefs.

Wobby Rock: As the name suggests this is the site to see wobbegong sharks. This site also has a lot more to offer. With lovely boulders to explore and small swim throughs, this site is also a good spot to search for the grey nurse sharks that use it as a transitional home. You will also encounter large schools of surgeon fish and the occasional turtle.

Caves: This shallow site is often used for our training dives with a maximum depth of 12 meters and a small 1 to 3 metre ledge which homes schools of surgeonfish, wobbegong sharks, small tropical reef fish and turtles. This is the site that we occasionally see manta rays gliding by or stopping for a clean by the cleaner fish on top of the ledge.

Reminder for divers:

As with all dives, the night dive is subject to weather, and we will send out an email and text the day before at 3:30 pm to confirm the trip and its departure time.

Please note if you have not dived in the last 2 years you will be required to complete a Scuba Review/Refresher course before you can participate in any diving activities.

These can be arranged on most days at set times provided we have at least 3 days notice. Please contact us on 07 5444 5656 for more information.

This is also in open water and we suggest that you look into seasickness medication to minimize the chance of it impacting your trip.

Local Reefs Double Dive (Shallow Reef Suitable for Open Water Students 6-18m)
  • Duration: 5 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: Mooloolaba, QLD
  • Product code: REEFWSTUDENT

On your arrival to Sunreef, we will check you in and see that your gear is organized, whether you prefer one of our staff to set up for you, or you would like to do it for yourself. After we verify all paperwork is in order, settle any balances, site divers’ certification cards, and ensure gear is organized, we'll then depart out to one of our local reefs.

Divers take note:

If you are wanting a guide, or are booking singly (without a dive buddy), then you may need to go with an instructor who is teaching an open water course. Because of the nature of the course, your dive times may get cut short, and the area you can explore will be severely restricted. If planning to go with a buddy, and unguided, there are far less restrictions on these dives.

Local Reefs Double Dive (Shallow Reef Suitable for Open Water Students 6-18m) - per person AUD$ 99.00
udibranch Double Dive
  • Duration: 5 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: Mooloolaba, QLD
  • Product code: NUDI

Nudibranchs - they're obscure, bizarre, psychedelic, and weird. For photographers, they can be the perfect macro subject - not too fast, full of contrast, and interesting to look at. For the naturalist, there is nothing like a nudibranch - an animal with its lungs exposed, over 3000 different species, some being transparent, some being solar-powered, and all being hermaphroditic.

These animals are very unique. Divers can often make their dive somewhat of an "Easter egg hunt", as the search for nudibranchs can be engaging, with new varieties continuously being discovered. Nudibranchs can be found in most marine environments - in tide pools, estuaries, and even the open water, with over 750 species found on the Sunshine Coast. Our "nudi" dives typically take place on Mooloolaba's local reefs, where there is an abundance of nudibranchs amongst the other marine life.

What you can expect:

On your arrival to Sunreef, we will check you in and see that your gear is organized, whether you prefer one of our staff to set up for you, or you would like to do it for yourself. We'll then depart out to one of our local reefs. Each diver will be given a thorough briefing about the dive as the boat traverses the calm waters of the Mooloolah River.

We have a nudibranch expert brought in for the day who will be explaining which species we may see on the dive. The day's weather, diving conditions, and recent nudibranch sightings impact what site we will choose for the day, as we always try to give you the best experience. Once we anchor the boat, the crew will help get all divers into the water.

The dive will last for 50 minutes, or as soon as a diver or their buddy reaches 50 bar, whichever comes first.

We then have a 30 minute surface interval before getting back into the water for a second dive. The nudibranch expert will also be diving on the trip, so you are welcome to ask any questions whilst on board the boat. Occasionally, she/he may even gather some nudibranchs to bring to the surface for us to examine and for research purposes.

After the second dive, we return to the shop, where there is a post-dive briefing,  the nudibranch expert then gives a presentation on the nudi world. Each month is a new presentation with different focuses, with past presentations including monstrous nudibranchs, hard to find nudibranchs, and rare nudibranchs of the Sunshine Coast. If you are diving with your own gear, the dive crew can also wash your gear for you. This will happen during the presentation, and then you can collect your drying, freshly washed gear before departing.

Bear in mind that many of our dive sites are +20 meters deep, and whilst we don't require an advanced diver qualification or a nitrox qualification (also known as enriched air or EANX), both can be handy to have. We offer nitrox tank fill upgrades for free, which can be helpful when diving a bit deeper for longer. This can impact your dive time for your second  as our surface interval time is limited. If you are not nitrox certified, we offer nitrox courses for $99, which can be conducted on the day. See our nitrox course page for more details. Our advanced course covers deeper dive principles, along with other diving aspects, which can prove useful on these dives. See our advanced course page for extra information.

Swim with Whales Tour
  • Duration: 4 Hours (approx.)
  • Location: Mooloolaba, QLD
  • Product code: WHALESWIM
The Experience

The opportunity to swim with a humpback whale is a rare and very special one – something that people who have experienced it have described as “life changing”. “Its truly incredible to that one of the largest of mammals in our oceans is so graceful and gentle – they are just so trusting of human beings. They seem as intrigued by us as we are of them and glide effortlessly around us, with such a gentleness that it’s like they recognise our fragility in comparison and know we are there out of wonder and respect.”

Every day is different on the water, and every encounter is unique. Our whale watching and swimming trips are approximately four hours in duration, with each trip catering for up to 20 participants. Sunreef provides all participants with wetsuits and snorkelling equipment required for the adventure. Participants are also fully briefed on the boat about what to expect from the experience.

Unfortunately if you are pregnant we cannot take you on this tour. Also if you are bringing children between 8 and 15 yrs old there must have an adult/guardian on board or in the water at all times with them. If you are bringing kids between 8 an d 15 please be aware that they need to be strong swimmers for this activity, they must not be holding onto you as the adult, if this is seen to be happening they will not be allowed in the water again. Children under 8 are not permitted on board.

Once a whale is sighted, the boat will be put into neutral 100m or more away from the whale, and if the conditions are determined as safe by our trained crew, the boat will be turned off and swimmers will be allowed into the water holding on to the floating line attached to the boat.
Then it’s all up to the whale – it is a natural experience and it is 100% on the whale’s own terms. Whales are known as curious creatures so they may come over towards us or they may just swim past or away. Either way it’s an experience you will never forget. It is also a case of looking but not touching these wondrous creatures.
While Sunreef will do everything in its power, to ensure whale encounters, we can’t guarantee that our guests will get to swim with these magnificent sea mammals but if on the day the boat doesn’t sight a whale, you will be eligible for 50% off your next trip.

This is also in Open Water and we suggest that you look into Seasickness medication to minimize the chance of it effecting your trip.

The Location

The whale swimming and watching operations work out of Mooloolaba in the heart of Queensland’s Naturally Refreshing Sunshine Coast. It takes about 10 minutes from the Sunreef dock to get out on the beautiful waters off the Coast, which are at their best during the winter months when the whales migrate. Water temperatures during this time range from 17 to 23 degrees C and visibility is regularly up to 30 metres.

Our Responsibility

At Sunreef, we take your safety and that of the whales very seriously. It is our Number 1 priority so all participants must follow the directions of staff at all times. Sunreef is experienced in guiding in-water activities and adhere to all relevant safety guidelines. All encounters are conducted in accordance with the Australian National Guidelines for Whale and Dolphin Watching (2005) as well as our own strict Code of Practice which has been developed with whale researchers and experts to ensure the protection of the whales. We are also working with the University of the Sunshine Coast on a coordinated research project to increase the knowledge around these amazing creatures. Our commitment includes recording information about every whale sighting and offering spots on every boat for the researchers to get out into the field to collect their own data. Our guests can also participate, if they wish, using our whale spotting sheets. Whilst we will do everything in our power to ensure a great experience, this is 100% on the whale’s terms so we cannot guarantee that everyone will get to swim with the whales. However, if our boat does not see any whales during your trip, you will have the opportunity to rebook at a 50% discount. In the event of poor weather conditions cause cancellation, any guests not able to be booked on another tour will receive a refund. Please note that while the weather can look great on the beach, this doesn't mean that the conditions off-shore are safe enough for swimming.
